Biophysics Seminar

General information

The biophysics seminar is jointly operated by the Department of Physics and the Biophysics Graduate Program. The biophysics seminar comprises presentations by outside speakers, internal speakers, and students. The schedule can be found here. Students in the Biophysics graduate program have to register for the seminar as Physics 7891 (Bundschuh). Students past the candidacy exam do not have to sign up for the course but still have to attend in order to remain in good standing with the program.

Student groups

In order to facilitate lively interactions, students split up into small groups in addition to the plenary presentations. An overview over the current groups is available here. Please refer to this document for detailed instructions on how the sessions should be structured.

Each group has a group coordinator who is running the groups together with a faculty mentor. If you are a group coordinator please check out the instructions for group coordinators.

Every student attending the Biophysics seminar is required to sign up for a group. The web site automatically generates the sign-up sheets from the registered group members. Thus, no attendance will be recorded for students not properly signed up to a group. In order to sign up for a group log in on the class administration web site with your last name and your PIN. If you have never logged in, your PIN are the last four digits of your ID in the student information system (SIS). If cannot find out your ID, please see me to obtain your initial PIN. Select the correct semester and go to "group membership". Next to the descriptions of the groups you will find buttons to sign up for a group. If you already are the group leader or group coordinator of a group you will not be able to choose a different group. First find a new leader or coordinator before you change the group.

If you are not a registered student of the Biophysics seminar you are still welcome to attend the group sessions. If you plan on attending a group regularly please send me an email with your last name and your initial 4 digit PIN. I will enter you into the system and ask you to sign up for a group on the web site so that I know how many people are attending which group.

Grading

Attendance at the Biophysics seminar is required for all students of the Biophysics Graduate Program during autumn and spring semester. Students that have not yet passed their candidacy exam are required to register for the course. Students past their candidacy exam should not register for the course, but are still required to attend the seminar at the same lavel as required for a passing grade in the course.

The course is graded on attendance. Three missed group sessions or one missed seminar day and one missed group session are permitted per semester for a satisfactory grade. Any unexcused absence beyond this will result in an unsatisfactory grade. Make sure you sign the sign-in sheet during every session since this is the only way we can verify your attendance. If you have to be excused for a specific session (e.g., because you have to attend a scientific meeting or because a class that you take coincides with one of the seminar days) send me an email.
